Not a tree guy. A board certified arborist.
Thomas Jones is a NYS Board Certified Arborist based in Smithtown. He's been diagnosing tree problems, treating Long Island's soil, and managing pests across Suffolk County since 2014. He's also the owner, and he's on every job.

What changes when the owner is the arborist
You get a diagnosis, not just an estimate
Before any work starts, Thomas inspects your trees for disease, pest damage, structural problems, and soil issues. Oak wilt killed red oaks across Long Island last year. Spotted lanternfly is confirmed in Suffolk County. Most tree crews aren't trained to identify these. A board certified arborist is.
Trees worth saving get saved
A mature red oak on a Suffolk County lot can add $30,000 or more to a home's value. We don't take that down unless we've exhausted every treatment option first. Deep root fertilization, targeted spraying, soil work. Many trees that look far gone can come back with the right care.
One call for your whole yard
Tree health, tick and mosquito control, deer damage prevention, goose removal, landscape design, even ponds and waterfalls. You don't need three different companies. We cover the full picture, and the work is coordinated because the same team is doing all of it.
We know Long Island's ground
Sandy glacial soil that drains nutrients before roots can absorb them. Salt spray from both shores. Nor'easters and hurricanes that hit Suffolk County harder than almost anywhere on the East Coast. We've been working in these specific conditions since 2014. That matters when someone is writing your care plan.
Tree care, tick control, and landscape design. One team.
The goal is to keep your trees standing
Active threats on Long Island right now
Oak wilt can kill a red oak in one season. Spotted lanternfly is confirmed across Suffolk County. Emerald ash borer is here too. These are spreading, and most tree crews aren't looking for them. By the time you notice the damage yourself, the window for treatment is a lot smaller.
Why Long Island trees struggle
The soil here is sandy and glacial. It drains nutrients before roots can absorb them. Add salt spray from both shores and you have trees under constant stress that most care plans don't account for. Deep root fertilization and soil amendment address what's actually going on underground. That's where most tree problems start.
No pressure, honest answers
Thomas owns the company. He doesn't have a sales quota. If your tree can be saved, he'll lay out the treatment plan. If it genuinely needs to come down, he'll tell you why. Either way, you'll understand what's going on with your trees before any work starts.
“Tom is amazing! Every time I reach out, he gets back to me right away. He’s incredibly knowledgeable about every type of tree, shrub, and bush, and his prices.”

A certified arborist has passed a state board exam on tree biology, disease identification, soil science, and pruning standards. Most tree companies in Suffolk County are licensed and insured, and that matters, but it's a business credential, not a knowledge credential. Here's the practical difference: an arborist can tell you why your tree is dropping leaves in July and what to do about it. A tree company can cut it down. Both have a role. But you want the diagnosis first.
That's what the free consultation is for. Thomas will look at the tree in person and tell you what he sees. A lot of trees that look like they're dying are actually nutrient-starved, and Long Island's sandy soil makes that common. Deep root fertilization and soil work can turn those around. Pest and disease issues have their own treatments. If a tree genuinely needs to come down, he'll explain why. No pressure either way.
It depends on your town. Smithtown, Huntington, and Brookhaven each have their own tree preservation ordinances with different rules around tree size, species, and proximity to property lines or wetlands. Huntington requires a formal application with photos and your Suffolk County Tax Map number. Some towns don't require permits for smaller trees on private property. We know the rules for each municipality and handle the paperwork.
Spotted lanternfly has been confirmed in both Nassau and Suffolk County since 2021 and it's spreading. It feeds on maples, oaks, pines, walnuts, and willows, leaving behind sticky honeydew that leads to sooty mold. It won't kill a healthy tree outright, but it weakens trees already under stress from our sandy soil and salt exposure. We offer targeted treatment programs and can assess whether your trees are at risk during a free consultation.
