This is especially true on Long Island. Suffolk County’s soil has a specific set of challenges that most generic tree advice completely ignores. And by the time the damage shows up in the canopy, it’s usually been building underground for two to five growing seasons.

Here’s what’s actually going on, what soil aeration does about it, and how to know if your trees need it.

What Soil Aeration Does for Tree Root Health

Soil aeration is the process of relieving compaction in the root zone so that oxygen, water, and nutrients can actually reach the roots that need them. Healthy soil has roughly 50% pore space — about half air, half water. Compacted soil can drop to around 10%. That’s not a minor difference. That’s roots slowly suffocating while the tree above ground still looks mostly okay.

For trees, aeration isn’t the same thing as what your lawn care company does in the fall. Lawn aeration targets the top inch or two of turf. Tree root zone aeration goes deeper — into the 5 to 18 inch range where feeder roots actually live and absorb nutrients. Different tool, different depth, different purpose entirely.

Why Suffolk County's Sandy Glacial Soil Makes This Worse

Long Island’s soil isn’t like most of the Northeast. The island was formed by glacial deposition, which left behind predominantly sandy loam and loamy sand across most of Suffolk County — soil types like Plymouth loamy sand and Montauk sandy loam that Cornell Cooperative Extension has documented throughout the region. Sandy soil drains fast. That sounds like a good thing, but for trees it means nutrients wash through the root zone before roots have a real chance to absorb them.

So you’re dealing with two problems at once. The soil structure doesn’t hold nutrients well to begin with, and when compaction sets in — from foot traffic, lawn equipment, or decades of suburban use — the little pore space that did exist closes off even further. Roots can’t breathe. Water pools or drains too fast depending on the season. The tree starts pulling from reserves it was never really building in the first place.

Compaction doesn’t announce itself. It builds quietly over years — sometimes decades — and the tree absorbs the stress long before you see it reflected in the leaves. You notice the canopy thinning in year four. The compaction started in year one.

Common causes on Suffolk County properties include construction and renovation work (heavy equipment is one of the fastest ways to destroy soil structure around existing trees), repeated foot traffic across root zones, lawn mowing equipment, and over-irrigation. A lot of Long Island’s suburban landscaping has been in place since the post-war development era. Some of those trees have been growing in compromised soil for thirty or forty years without anyone realizing it.

One scenario we see regularly: a homeowner renovates their property, the project goes well, and two or three years later a tree that was healthy before the work starts declining. There’s no obvious pest, no visible disease. What happened is that construction equipment compacted the soil around the root zone, and the tree has been slowly losing ground ever since. By the time symptoms appear in the canopy, the window for easy intervention is already narrowing.

The good news is that compaction is reversible — if you catch it before the root system is too far gone. Soil aeration, done properly and at the right depth, reopens those channels and gives roots the breathing room they need to recover. Pair that with organic matter incorporation and the right follow-up treatment, and trees that looked like they were heading toward removal can stabilize and push new growth within a season or two.

Deep Root Fertilization: Why Aeration Has to Come First

Deep root fertilization is one of the most effective tools for restoring tree health on Long Island — but it works significantly better when the soil has been aerated first. Here’s why: injecting liquid nutrients into compacted soil is like pouring water into a clogged pipe. The fertilizer goes in, but it can’t distribute evenly through the root zone. You get uneven uptake, and a lot of what you’re applying doesn’t reach the feeder roots that need it.

Aerate the soil first, and those channels open up. The fertilizer has somewhere to go. It reaches the roots that are actually doing the work of feeding the tree, rather than pooling in isolated pockets. We treat these two services as a coordinated program, not separate line items, because that’s how they actually function in practice.

What Tree Nutrition Actually Looks Like Underground on Long Island

When people think about tree nutrition, they usually think about fertilizer spikes or granules spread at the base of the tree. The problem is that surface-applied fertilizer rarely makes it to tree roots. Lawn grass, ground cover, and shallow-rooted plants intercept it first. By the time anything filters down to the 5 to 12 inch depth where most feeder roots are active, there’s very little left — and on Long Island’s fast-draining sandy soil, what does make it that far often washes through before roots can absorb it.

Deep root fertilization bypasses all of that. Liquid nutrients are injected directly into the root zone under pressure, reaching the feeder roots without competing with everything else growing on the surface. On Long Island, where the soil is already working against the tree’s ability to hold onto nutrients, this direct delivery method isn’t just more efficient — it’s often the difference between a treatment that works and one that doesn’t.

Tree nutrition isn’t just about nitrogen. Healthy trees need a balanced profile of macro and micronutrients, and deficiencies show up in specific ways — iron chlorosis causes yellowing between leaf veins, for example, while nitrogen deficiency tends to produce pale, undersized leaves overall. A certified arborist can read these symptoms and calibrate the fertilization program accordingly, rather than applying a generic formula and hoping for the best.

For trees already under stress from pests like spotted lanternfly — which is confirmed in Suffolk County and actively spreading — or from diseases like oak wilt, which has been killing red oaks across Long Island, proper nutrition matters more, not less. A tree with healthy nutrient reserves and a functioning root system is significantly better equipped to fight off an infestation or disease pressure than one that’s been nutrient-starved for years. Soil health is the foundation that every other aspect of tree care is built on.

What the Air Spade Does That Standard Aeration Can't

Standard core aeration — the kind done with a mechanical aerator — pulls plugs of soil and creates vertical channels for oxygen and water. It’s effective for moderate compaction and works well as part of a regular maintenance program. But when compaction is severe, or when we need to actually see what’s happening at the root level, we use an air spade.

An air spade uses a concentrated stream of compressed air to excavate soil around tree roots without cutting or tearing root tissue. It’s precise in a way that digging with a shovel or running a mechanical aerator never can be. We can clear soil from around the root flare, identify girdling roots that are slowly strangling the tree, create radial trenches for organic matter incorporation, and get a clear picture of what the root system actually looks like — all without causing the kind of trauma that traditional excavation would.

This matters especially on properties where something has gone visibly wrong and a standard aeration program isn’t enough of an answer.
