That shift in guidance matters because it changes what your next step should be. You’re not waiting for a state response team. You’re not filling out a report and hoping someone shows up. The management of spotted lanternfly on your property is your responsibility — and the sooner you treat it as such, the better the outcome for your trees.
Which Nassau County Trees Are Most at Risk from Spotted Lanternfly
Spotted lanternfly feeds on more than 70 plant species, so the idea that it only threatens one or two trees is a common misconception worth clearing up early. On Long Island properties, the trees most commonly at risk include maples, oaks, willows, black walnut, and fruit trees like apple, cherry, peach, and plum. Grapevines are particularly vulnerable — heavy infestations can kill them outright, which is part of why spotted lanternfly is considered a serious threat to Long Island’s wine industry.
The pest’s preferred host, though, is tree of heaven — Ailanthus altissima. If you have one on your property, or your neighbor does, it’s functioning as a magnet. Tree of heaven is widespread throughout Nassau County, growing along roadsides, fence lines, and disturbed areas. Many homeowners don’t recognize it. It looks similar to staghorn sumac or black walnut, and it grows fast in places you might not be paying attention to. Its presence on or near your property creates a constant reinfestation pressure that makes one-time DIY treatment largely ineffective.
Here’s what makes Nassau County’s situation more complicated than most: Long Island’s soil is sandy and glacial. It drains nutrients before roots can fully absorb them. Add salt spray from both the Sound and the Atlantic — and many Nassau County properties deal with exposure from both shores — and you have trees that are already under chronic stress before spotted lanternfly enters the picture.
When SLF feeds by piercing plant tissue and sucking sap, it weakens the tree’s ability to photosynthesize. On a tree growing in rich inland soil, that stress may be manageable. Most homeowners first notice spotted lanternfly in late summer, when the adults are visible and impossible to miss — roughly an inch long, with distinctive spotted wings and a flash of red when they open. That’s the stage that drives people to search for help. But by the time adults are swarming your trees in August and September, the population is already well established.
The stage that matters most for long-term control is the one that’s hardest to see: the egg masses.
Spotted lanternfly lays eggs in October, and those eggs overwinter on any hard surface — tree bark, stone walls, outdoor furniture, grills, vehicles, trailers, bikes, and children’s play equipment. Each egg mass looks like a smear of dried mud or putty, roughly an inch long, and contains approximately 30 to 50 eggs. They blend in. A general lawn crew walking a Nassau County property in November is very likely to miss them entirely.
Scraping egg masses before they hatch in spring is one of the most effective things you can do to reduce next year’s population. The method is simple — a flat edge, a bag, and some hand sanitizer or rubbing alcohol to kill the eggs — but finding them requires knowing what you’re looking for and where to look. Check the bark of host trees at eye level and below. Check the underside of deck railings, the legs of outdoor furniture, the surface of stone walls, and the frames of vehicles parked near trees.
If you moved anything onto your property from elsewhere — firewood, landscaping materials, patio furniture stored off-site — check those surfaces carefully. Spotted lanternfly spread long distances primarily because people unknowingly move infested materials, not because the insect travels far on its own.
Dormant oil spray applied in fall and winter is an effective professional treatment for egg masses at scale. It’s particularly useful when egg masses are high on tree trunks or in locations that are difficult to reach manually. This is also one of the treatment windows that homeowners tend to overlook — because the adults are gone and the property feels quiet — but it’s one of the more cost-effective interventions in the full seasonal program.
Kill Spotted Lanternfly More Effectively with a Certified Arborist
When Nassau County homeowners search for help with spotted lanternfly, they often find pest control companies in the results. That’s not wrong — a licensed pesticide applicator can apply treatments that reduce the active population. But there’s a meaningful difference between treating a pest and treating a tree, and that difference matters more on Long Island than almost anywhere else.
A certified arborist doesn’t just look at the insect. We look at the tree it’s feeding on — its overall health, the condition of the soil, whether there are other stressors compounding the damage. That full picture changes what treatment makes sense and how urgently it needs to happen. An exterminator treats what’s crawling. An arborist treats what’s declining.
Spotted Lanternfly Control: What Professional Treatment Actually Involves
Professional spotted lanternfly control isn’t a single spray visit. The pest has a year-round life cycle, and effective management follows that cycle rather than reacting to it after the fact. The general framework we use is called integrated pest management — IPM — and it combines monitoring, physical controls, and targeted chemical treatments timed to the pest’s biology.
In spring, systemic insecticides applied via soil injection or trunk injection are the most effective tool available. These treatments move through the tree’s vascular system and remain active through the season, providing protection against nymphs as they emerge and feed. Unlike contact sprays, they don’t wash off in rain and don’t require repeated application every few weeks. Timing matters here — applications made in mid-spring, as the first and second instar nymphs are hatching, are significantly more effective than treatments applied later in the season when adults are already mobile and dispersing.
Through summer and into fall, contact sprays are used to knock down active adult populations. These require reapplication roughly every three weeks during the active season, which runs from April through October. Basal trunk spray — an EPA-approved treatment applied directly to the lower trunk — is another option during this window, but it’s restricted to licensed commercial applicators. Homeowners cannot legally apply it themselves.
What we add to this framework is the ability to assess whether the trees being treated are already compromised. If a Nassau County maple is showing signs of nutrient deficiency from poor soil drainage, treating the spotted lanternfly infestation without also addressing the underlying soil health is an incomplete solution. Deep root fertilization can be incorporated into the same visit, giving the tree a better chance of recovering from the feeding stress it’s already absorbed. That kind of integrated approach — pest management and plant health care together — is what sets arborist-led treatment apart.
What Nassau County Homeowners Can Do While Waiting for Professional Treatment
There’s a window between when you notice the problem and when professional treatment can be scheduled, and it’s worth using it wisely. A few approaches are genuinely useful. Others are popular but counterproductive, and knowing the difference saves you time and frustration.
Scraping egg masses manually is the single most impactful thing you can do on your own. If you find them on tree bark, stone walls, or outdoor furniture between October and April, scrape them into a bag with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer and seal it before disposing. Each mass you remove is 30 to 50 fewer insects next spring.
A shop vacuum can be effective for collecting live nymphs and adults in accessible locations. It sounds low-tech, but Cornell IPM researchers have endorsed it as a practical tool for small infestations. Seal and dispose of the contents immediately.
Circle traps — funnel-style traps that wrap around a tree trunk and direct insects into a collection bag — can help reduce populations on heavily infested trees. These are different from sticky band traps, which are adhesive tape wrapped directly around the trunk. Sticky band traps are problematic because they trap and kill birds, small mammals, and beneficial insects along with spotted lanternfly. NYC Parks does not endorse them, and for good reason. If you’re using traps, use circle traps, not sticky bands.
What makes a real dent in the population, though, is addressing the reinfestation source. If tree of heaven is growing anywhere on your property — or on neighboring properties nearby — it is continuously replenishing the spotted lanternfly population regardless of what you do to the adults you can see. A certified arborist can identify tree of heaven (it’s frequently misidentified), advise on whether removal or a trap tree treatment strategy makes more sense for your specific situation, and help you understand whether your neighbors’ untreated trees are undermining your own management efforts.
Nassau County’s dense suburban development means that question matters more here than it would in a rural setting. There’s no easy answer to neighbor reinfestation, but understanding the dynamic helps you set realistic expectations for what treatment can and can’t accomplish on its own.
