That stress shows up as yellowing leaves, thinning canopies, and early leaf drop — symptoms that look a lot like disease but are actually the tree running low on what it needs to survive.
That said, some of what you’re seeing is disease. The challenge is telling the difference, because the treatment path for a nutrient-starved tree is completely different from the treatment path for a fungal infection or a bacterial problem. Getting that wrong — or skipping the diagnosis entirely — is how treatable trees end up getting removed.
Oak Wilt, Anthracnose, and the Diseases Most Likely to Affect Your Nassau County Trees
Oak wilt is one of the most serious tree diseases in New York State, and it’s actively present on Long Island. It spreads two ways: above ground, through sap beetles that carry the fungal spores to fresh wounds on nearby trees, and below ground, through root grafts between neighboring oaks. Red oaks are hit hardest — a red oak infected with oak wilt can lose more than 90% of its leaves within one to two months. The wilting typically starts at the top of the canopy and works its way down and inward, which is one of the clearest visual markers that separates oak wilt from other diseases.
One thing Nassau County homeowners often don’t realize: pruning oaks during the February through June window creates open wounds at exactly the time when sap beetles are most active and most likely to be carrying oak wilt spores. A pruning cut made without proper precautions during that period can introduce the disease directly into the tree.
Anthracnose is far more common and far less dramatic, but it’s worth knowing. It’s a fungal disease that thrives during cool, wet springs — exactly the weather pattern Nassau County sees regularly. On maples, oaks, and sycamores, it shows up as irregular brown or tan patches on leaves, often following the leaf veins, sometimes with small dark fungal fruiting bodies on the undersides. Young leaves and new shoots are most vulnerable. In most established trees, anthracnose is a cosmetic issue rather than a death sentence — but it does signal that the tree’s immune response is under pressure, and repeated infections over multiple seasons can weaken a tree significantly.
Beech Leaf Disease deserves a mention here because it’s been confirmed in Nassau County since 2019, and most homeowners have never heard of it. It’s caused by a microscopic nematode — not a fungus, not an insect — and it shows up as dark striping between the leaf veins, giving the leaves a banded or puckered appearance. Mature beeches can survive for six to ten years after infection; younger trees can decline much faster.
Spotted Lanternfly and the Sooty Mold It Leaves Behind
If you’ve noticed a black, sooty coating on your tree’s bark, leaves, or even on your outdoor furniture, there’s a good chance spotted lanternfly is involved. SLF was confirmed across Nassau County in October 2021, and it feeds on over 70 plant species common in Nassau County landscapes — oaks, maples, walnut, willow, apple trees, and more. The insect itself feeds on sap by piercing the bark of branches and trunks, and as it feeds, it excretes a sticky liquid called honeydew. That honeydew coats whatever is below it, and the sooty mold fungus grows on top of it.
The mistake most homeowners make is treating the sooty mold as the primary problem. It isn’t. It’s a downstream symptom of the SLF infestation. Cleaning or treating the mold without addressing the spotted lanternfly population doesn’t solve anything — the mold will return as long as the feeding continues.
Identifying SLF at different life stages matters because treatment timing depends on it. In spring, the nymphs are small and black with white spots. By early summer, they develop red coloring. By late summer and fall, the adults appear — gray wings with black spots on the outside, and bright red underwings when they open. Egg masses, laid from October through November, look like a smear of dried gray mud on bark, stone walls, or any hard surface. Scraping and destroying egg masses in winter is one of the most effective early interventions available to homeowners.
The sooty mold itself blocks sunlight from reaching the leaf surface, which compounds the stress SLF feeding already creates. A tree dealing with both active SLF infestation and heavy sooty mold accumulation is under significant pressure — and that’s when secondary infections from other pathogens become a real concern.
How to Identify Tree Fungus: What Those Growths on Your Bark Actually Mean
Fungal growths on trees tend to alarm homeowners immediately, and for good reason — but the alarm is often aimed at the wrong thing. The shelf-like bracket fungus or conk growing out of a trunk isn’t the disease itself. It’s the visible sign of a decay process that’s already well underway inside the wood. By the time a fungal fruiting body is large enough to see, the internal decay it represents is typically far more advanced than the exterior suggests.
This matters practically because a tree can have a full, healthy-looking canopy and still have significant structural compromise in its trunk or root zone. In Nassau County’s dense suburban neighborhoods — where trees often sit within a few feet of a home, a sidewalk, or a parked car — a structurally compromised tree isn’t just a tree health problem. It’s a liability.
Fungal Growths on Bark vs. Leaves: Reading the Difference
Fungal problems on trees show up in two very different ways, and they signal very different things about what’s happening inside the tree.
Fungal growths on bark — conks, shelf fungi, bracket fungi — indicate internal wood decay. The fungus is breaking down the structural wood fibers from the inside out. The fruiting body you see on the outside is essentially the reproductive structure of a much larger fungal network living within the trunk or root system. These are structural warning signs. They don’t always mean the tree needs to come down immediately, but they do mean a formal risk assessment is warranted — especially for trees near structures or high-traffic areas.
Fungal problems on leaves are a different story. Powdery mildew, for example, shows up as a white or grayish powdery coating on leaf surfaces, most commonly on dogwoods, oaks, and ornamental trees. It’s widespread on Long Island, particularly during humid summers, and it looks alarming. In most established trees, it’s not fatal — but it does stress the tree, and repeated seasons of heavy mildew can weaken it over time.
Apple scab produces dark, scabby lesions on apple and crabapple leaves and fruit. Fire blight, which is bacterial rather than fungal, causes shoot tips to turn brown and curl downward in a distinctive shepherd’s crook shape on apple, pear, and related species.
The diagnostic logic that matters here is this: leaf-based fungal symptoms are usually about the tree’s immediate environment — humidity, airflow, the wet spring we just had. Bark-based fungal growths are about the tree’s internal health and structural integrity. They require different responses, and conflating them leads to either unnecessary panic or dangerous complacency.
Using This as a Tree Disease Identifier: When the Symptoms Don't Add Up
One of the most common situations we see in Nassau County is a homeowner who has already tried to match their tree’s symptoms to something they found online — and the match doesn’t quite fit. The spots are the wrong color, or the pattern doesn’t match the photos, or the tree is losing leaves but it doesn’t look like any of the diseases described. That gap between “something is clearly wrong” and “I know exactly what it is” is where misdiagnosis happens, and it’s more consequential than most people realize.
Start with location: where on the tree are the symptoms appearing? Symptoms starting at the top of the canopy and moving downward often point to vascular disease — oak wilt being the most serious example. Symptoms starting on lower branches and moving upward tend to be fungal. Symptoms appearing uniformly across the whole canopy — yellowing, sparse leaves, overall decline — often point to a root zone problem, soil issue, or nutrient deficiency rather than a disease at all.
Then look at the pattern on individual leaves. Irregular brown patches following the veins are characteristic of anthracnose. Circular spots with defined edges, sometimes with a yellow halo, suggest fungal leaf spot diseases. Margins browning while the center stays green often points to salt damage or drought stress — both common in Nassau County’s coastal and near-coastal neighborhoods, from the South Shore communities like Massapequa and Wantagh to the North Shore in Great Neck and Oyster Bay.
Finally, check the bark. Discoloration, oozing, or soft spots in the bark can indicate bacterial canker or early-stage fungal infection. Streaking in the sapwood just beneath the bark — visible if you peel back a small section — is a classic indicator of oak wilt in red oaks. Any shelf-like growth, regardless of size, warrants a closer look at the tree’s structural condition.
None of this replaces a trained eye. But it gives you a starting point — and it helps you describe what you’re seeing accurately when you do make the call.

The honest answer is: sooner than most people do. Oak wilt can kill a red oak in a single season. Beech Leaf Disease has been progressing quietly in Nassau County since 2019.
