Oak Wilt on Long Island: What Suffolk County Homeowners Need to Know
Oak wilt is not a distant threat. We’ve confirmed it in Central Islip, West Islip, Southold, Riverhead, and Babylon. The NYSDEC issued an emergency order establishing protective zones in Suffolk County — prohibiting the movement of oak wood or firewood out of quarantined areas. If you have red oaks on your property, this disease deserves your full attention.
The fungus responsible, *Bretziella fagacearum*, attacks the tree’s vascular system — the network of vessels that moves water from roots to leaves. Once that system is compromised, the tree can’t sustain itself. Red oaks can die in as little as three to six weeks after infection. Some go faster.
How Does Oak Wilt Spread Between Trees in the Same Yard?
This is the part most homeowners don’t know — and it’s the part that matters most. Oak wilt spreads in two ways: through the air via sap beetles, and underground through root grafts between neighboring trees.
The root graft pathway is what makes oak wilt so dangerous in a residential setting. Red oaks planted near each other often share root systems underground. Once one tree is infected, the fungus can travel through those connected roots to adjacent trees — no beetle required, no visible above-ground contact. You can lose a healthy-looking tree simply because it’s standing too close to one that’s already gone.
The beetle pathway is also worth understanding, because it’s directly tied to one of the most common mistakes people make with their oaks. Sap beetles are attracted to fresh wounds — including pruning cuts. Between April and November, when these beetles are active, a fresh pruning wound on an oak is essentially an open invitation for the oak wilt fungus. This is why we never prune oaks during warm months unless it’s an emergency, and why we seal any wounds immediately when we do. Most landscapers don’t know this. Many tree crews don’t either. A board-certified arborist does.
If you’ve had oaks pruned in spring or early summer by someone who didn’t mention any of this, it’s worth having those trees looked at. Not to alarm you — but because early detection is genuinely the only defense oak wilt responds to. There is no known cure. Once a red oak is infected, the goal shifts to containing the spread and protecting the trees around it. That means cutting root connections between infected and healthy trees before the fungus travels, and handling removal during the right window and in the right way.

How to Tell If Your Long Island Oak Has Oak Wilt
The symptoms of oak wilt in red oaks are distinctive once you know what you’re looking at — but they’re easy to mistake for drought stress, root damage, or just a bad season if you don’t. The most reliable sign is rapid wilting and browning that starts at the outer edges of the upper canopy and moves inward. Leaves often turn brown while still attached to the tree, curling at the edges. In a healthy tree, browning in summer is gradual. In an oak wilt situation, it can look like someone turned off the water supply — because functionally, they did.
You might also notice leaves dropping green, which is unusual. Or you might see discoloration in the wood just beneath the bark — dark streaking in the outer sapwood is a classic indicator, though you’d need to remove a small section of bark to see it. That’s not something to do yourself, partly because a misread can lead to unnecessary panic, and partly because a trained eye will catch things an untrained one won’t.
White oak trees infected with oak wilt tend to decline more slowly — over months or even years — which makes the disease easier to miss and harder to trace. By the time symptoms are obvious in a white oak, the root system may already be sharing the infection with neighboring trees.
What makes diagnosis tricky on Long Island specifically is that our sandy glacial soil creates chronic nutrient stress in trees — and nutrient-stressed trees show symptoms that overlap significantly with disease. A tree dropping leaves early or showing canopy dieback might be sick. It might also be starving. Getting the diagnosis right is the difference between treating the right problem and spending money on the wrong one. That’s not a job for a guess — it’s a job for someone trained in both soil science and disease pathology.
Emerald Ash Borer: The Insect Killing Ash Trees Across Suffolk County
Emerald ash borer was confirmed in Suffolk County in 2019, most likely spread via firewood brought in from vacation properties on the East End. Since then, it has continued to move. EAB has now been confirmed in all but two New York counties, and every native ash species — white, green, and black — is at risk.
The insect itself is a small, metallic green beetle, but it’s the larvae that do the damage. They tunnel beneath the bark in S-shaped galleries that cut off the tree’s ability to move water and nutrients. Most infested ash trees die within two to four years if untreated. The problem is that by the time you can see obvious symptoms, the infestation is often already advanced.
Signs of Emerald Ash Borer Damage on Long Island Ash Trees
The earliest signs of EAB are easy to miss. Thinning in the upper canopy, slightly later leafing out in spring, or scattered dieback in the crown — these are the kinds of things most people chalk up to a rough season. By the time the more obvious symptoms appear, the tree is usually in serious trouble.
What to look for: D-shaped exit holes in the bark, roughly the size of a small fingernail, left behind by adult beetles as they emerge in late spring. S-shaped or serpentine galleries just beneath the bark, which you’d see if you peeled back a section. Vertical splits in the bark as the tree responds to larval activity. And woodpecker damage — woodpeckers are very good at finding EAB larvae, so heavy woodpecker activity on an ash tree is worth paying attention to.
Ash trees were planted widely as street trees throughout Suffolk County’s communities — in Smithtown, Huntington, Islip, Brookhaven, and across the East End. Many of those trees are now at risk. If you have ash trees on your property and haven’t had them assessed in the last few years, it’s worth doing.
The good news is that EAB is treatable — but only if you catch it early enough. Systemic insecticide treatments, typically applied as a soil drench or trunk injection in May or June, are effective when the infestation hasn’t yet reached a critical threshold. Waiting too long eliminates that option. A tree that’s lost more than roughly half its canopy is generally past the point where treatment makes sense, and removal becomes the honest recommendation. That’s not a decision we make lightly, but it is one we’ll make honestly — because treating a tree that can’t be saved wastes your money and your time.
One more thing worth knowing: EAB spreads long distances almost entirely because of human movement of firewood. It’s illegal in New York State to move firewood more than 50 miles from its source. If you’re bringing firewood in from elsewhere — or accepting it from someone who is — that’s a real risk, especially on the East End where the vacation property turnover is high.
Tree Fungus on Long Island: Anthracnose, Powdery Mildew, and What's Actually Treatable
“Tree fungus” covers a wide range of diseases, and not all of them are equally serious. What they share is that Long Island’s climate creates near-ideal conditions for fungal spread — humid air, wet springs, and sandy soil that stresses trees and weakens their natural defenses.
Anthracnose is one of the most common fungal diseases we see on Long Island, and it tends to flare up after cool, wet springs — which describes most of our springs. It affects dogwoods, maples, oaks, sycamores, and ash trees, showing up as dark, irregular blotches on leaves, early leaf drop, and in severe cases, twig dieback. It’s rarely fatal on its own, but repeated infections over multiple seasons weaken a tree significantly, making it more vulnerable to secondary pests and pathogens.
Powdery mildew is harder to miss — it shows up as a white, chalky coating on leaves and is common on crabapple, dogwood, oak, and lilac. It looks alarming but is generally manageable with targeted treatment and good airflow around the canopy. Tar spot on maples is similar — visually striking, but rarely a threat to the tree’s survival if addressed.
Verticillium wilt is a different story. It’s a soil-borne fungal disease that affects maples and ash trees, blocking the vascular system much like oak wilt does. Trees can decline slowly over years, or quickly over a single season. Diagnosis requires knowing what you’re looking at — the symptoms overlap with drought stress, root damage, and other diseases, and treating the wrong thing doesn’t help.
